The basic characteristic of security doors is their classification into security classes. Therefore, when choosing them, it is advisable to consult experts and inquire about the security level according to the ENV 1627 standard. The security class defines the level of resistance of the doors against forced entry attempts. Security classes are divided based on the tools used and the time required to overcome the barrier. There are six classified classes, and the rule is that the higher the number, the greater the level of protection the doors provide. Security doors of class 2 and 3 are capable of effectively protecting private property. Security doors in class 4 are mainly used in archives and banks. Doors in class 5 and 6 are more like vault doors, used for ammunition depots, military purposes, etc.
Definitely with a certificate
Security features determine both the level of resistance security doors can withstand and the amount of insurance coverage and compensation. Therefore, it is good to gather information about the necessary level of security for a house or apartment concerning insurance conditions. If you do not meet the security class required by a specific insurance company, the insurance company may not provide full compensation in the event of a burglary. Although each insurance company requires a different level of security when determining the amount of insurance and the value of insured items, all insurance companies require certified doors. Product certification guarantees that the product's properties, tested on a sample unit, comply with physical examination standards. When purchasing security doors, you must receive valid certificates.
Security features and reliable door functionality
Security doors must be functional, effective, and made of proven materials with long durability. The level of resistance, meaning the security class, is based on the manufacturer's construction know-how, the quality of materials used, and the manufacturing process. The foundation of security doors should be a sturdy frame made of hardwood or metal, with a security filling of various materials depending on the manufacturer. A high-quality construction combined with active and passive bolts forms a barrier against forced entry. Bolts (sometimes called pins or points by manufacturers) prevent the doors from being lifted off the hinges, pried open, or pushed out of the frame. Their placement also matters—the most effective positioning is just below the lintel and just above the floor. Passive bolts are located on the hinge side, they are fixed and prevent the doors from being lifted simply by closing them. In contrast, active bolts are extendable and controlled by turning the key. The hinges must also comply with security standards; security hinges with reinforced backs are used to prevent the doors from being removed.
Don't forget security frames, fittings, and a quality lock cylinder
Security doors alone are usually not enough. A comprehensive approach is much more effective, including investing in security frames. If security doors are installed into an existing metal frame, it is necessary to take certain measures, such as embedding it into walls and floors according to applicable regulations. Checking the level and strength of existing frames and hinges is also essential, and an expert should assess this. Security doors of class 3 are usually supplied as a complete set with a special security frame.
The lock cylinder should also meet security criteria. A common mistake people make is purchasing cheap lock cylinders for new security doors. The choice should match the security class of the selected doors—or even better, exceed the declared security class of the security doors. The ideal combination includes security fittings with a lock cylinder cover. The cover protects the lock cylinder against drilling and breaking. Additionally, we recommend adding extra security accessories, such as a panoramic peephole and a door chain.
Fireproof treatment acts as a barrier to fire spread
Security doors are also manufactured with fire-resistant versions. They can therefore have fire resistance ensured by both special fireproof filling and fireproof sealing tape.
Modern security doors must meet the strictest technical criteria and, in addition, can be a tasteful part of the interior. They can be aesthetically matched with other interior doors in an apartment or house. Regarding the installation of certified security doors, it should ideally be carried out by the manufacturer or certified installation companies.
