How to measure wall thickness for the right door frame

The wall thickness must be measured in the specific construction opening where the door frame will be installed. Do not rely on the wall thickness stated in the construction project, as in reality, every millimeter matters, and actual measurements will likely differ from the project. The door frame can be mounted on both brick and drywall partitions.

The wall thickness should always be measured only after the final flooring is installed and after completing wall finishing, such as plastering, painting, or tiling.

  • If the wall is perpendicular, meaning at a right angle to the floor, measure the thickness at several points and record the largest dimension.
  • If the wall is not perpendicular, its thickness is measured from the vertical line. Professionals use a level approximately as tall as the construction opening. Place the level on the finished floor along the wall and adjust it to a vertical position. The wall thickness should then be measured up to this vertical alignment of the level. Measure the thickness at several points and record the largest dimension.
Wall thickness measurement

The door frame is designed to accommodate walls that are not perfectly perpendicular, and the remaining space between the frame and the wall is filled with acrylic or plaster putty or plaster finishing.

The size type of the door frame is determined by the wall thickness - see table for determining the door frame designation.
