How to choose the right door frame in three steps

When choosing new interior doors, don’t forget about the frame – new doors deserve one! Frames are a functional part of the door set, and the right choice will also enhance the aesthetic level of your interior.

1. Decide on the specific type of frame.

The type of frame partly depends on the chosen door and partly on the circumstances of your interior (new build, apartment renovation, or renovation of the original frame, ...). For standard interior doors, a classic casing frame is usually used. If you already have steel frames, we offer the OKZ variant for a makeover without demolition. More information, including prices, can be found in the category casing frames and systems.

Miter joint of casing frame

Semi-grooved casing frame is the most commonly used type of frame. It is used for rebated doors, which typically overlap the frame by about 13 mm into the room where they open. The most common variant is the so-called mitre joint. We also offer a modern alternative – vertical semi-grooved frame, which uses a butt joint. For solid wood doors, we offer a solid wood frame; for veneered doors, a veneered frame is available.

Cladding of original steel frame without demolition

OKZ or steel frame cladding is designed to cover existing steel frames without the need to demolish them. It hides the standard metal frame. For classic panel-house frames with a so-called “nose,” we offer OKZ 85 mm. Even unattractive steel frames at entrance doors can be covered with partial OKZ, so they match the interior visually from the inside while maintaining security on the outside.

Special doors require special casing frames
Some door types can only be installed in special frames designed for them. These frames have specific structures that, for example, in fire doors, help maintain the technical properties of the door set. For design doors, unique constructions enable modern door-leaf mounting directly into the frame.

Fire-resistant frame

Fire-resistant frame is a specially constructed type of frame that looks like a standard casing frame at first glance. It differs in its internal structure and hinges so that in combination with fire doors it functions as a fire barrier.

Frame for flush doors

Frame for flush doors is intended for doors without a rebate. The door leaf is recessed deeper into the frame and forms one plane with it. It is equipped with concealed adjustable hinges and projects about 16 mm into the room.

You can choose from casing frames or vertical casing frames with an additional charge for the flush-door adaptation.

Frame for reverse doors

Frame for reverse doors, which open in the opposite direction, i.e., into the frame. This is an accessory for flush doors when all door leaves in the same space must align even if oriented oppositely. This frame has special hinges and projects about 12 mm into the room.

You can choose from casing frames or vertical casing frames with an extra charge for reverse doors.

Blind frame for sliding doors

Blind frame is used to define a construction opening where no door leaf will be installed. In combination with a pelmet, it is used to clad passages for wall sliding doors. It has no hinges or strike plate. As with casing frames, you can choose a “mitered” joint or vertical (butt joint). Blind frames can also be produced as OKZ (cladding for original steel frames).

Frame for all-glass doors

Frame for all-glass doors is designed to allow the installation of an all-glass door leaf, which is much heavier than standard wooden doors. It is also fitted with special hinges and strike plates adapted specifically for this type of door.

You can choose from casing frames or vertical casing frames with an extra charge for all-glass doors.

Split frame for sliding pocket doors

Split frame is used for sliding pocket doors recessed into a casing pocket. It is a special blind casing frame that covers the track of the sliding system in its upper part, where the door leaf is suspended.

You can choose from casing frames or vertical casing frames with an extra charge for pocket doors.

Frameless frame for a perfectly minimalist interior

Hidden frame

Hidden frame is concealed within the passage, leaving no visible boundary. It is an aluminum frame installed into the wall, with plaster brought right up to the edge of the integrated frame. Doors installed in this type of frame are flush with the wall and almost blend in. A hidden frame can be fitted with flush doors or reverse-opening doors. The ultimate minimalist solution!

2. Choose the right surface finish and décor

Casing frame types are produced in the same wide range of décors and finishes as door leaves. Typically, the finish and décor of the frame match the door leaf. It is important to avoid mixing different surface finishes even if they have the same décor name. For example, OAK décor in foil finish is not color-matched with OAK décor in PVC foil. For a perfect match, always choose the same surface finish and décor. A modern design can also be achieved by choosing a frame in a contrasting shade.
